In the Spotlight: Norma Kamali Fashion’s Eternal Futurist
Norma Kamali Portrait
Norma Kamali has spent more than five decades redefining what it means for fashion to be both modern and enduring. Her work proves that true timelessness isn’t static it evolves with the woman who wears it. In this exclusive interview by Luxury Endless, she reflects on intuition, innovation, and the emotional intelligence behind her designs, from the Sleeping Bag Coat to the universally beloved Diana dress. Kamali speaks candidly about movement, sensuality, digital culture, and the discipline of seasonless design, revealing a creative philosophy that has never followed the future but consistently shaped it.
Luxury Endless: Your career spans decades yet feels eternally modern. What does timelessness mean to you today, and how do you design for a woman who lives in constant evolution?
Norma Kamali: TIMELESSNESS IS SOMETHING THAT EARNS STATUS WITH TIME. Therefore for a women who lives in constant evolution it is her ability to know how to wear, for example a little black dress differently from decade to decade, year to year and season to season is how she benefits from a timeless style and is in the moment at the same time. The timelessness is in the style that is valid over long periods of time. It is not only the style but the construction, fit and the longevity of the fabrication. Then the styling has more to do with the way the woman accessorizes this timeless dress. Example, does she wear a pile of amazing necklaces and bracelets with cool flats and a ponytail, or no nail polish clean clear buffed nails, a soft twist pinned in the back of their head, pumps and a shawl wrap is the same woman in the same style perhaps in another season or another decade.

Luxury Endless: You’ve always been ahead of your time from athleisure to multifunctional dressing. Where do you believe innovation in fashion truly begins: with intuition, technology, or cultural shifts?
Norma Kamali: Innovation in fashion begins with intuition, technology cultural shifts and solutions.Examples of solutions to stay warm; make your sleeping bag into a coat and ready to wear clothing made from sweats creating casual sportswear. Another solution are easy travel styles in multi style designs, for example the All In One that can be worn 6 ways.
Luxury Endless: Your pieces often feel like they’re designed for movement, confidence, and freedom. How do you translate emotion into construction?
Norma Kamali: Woman move more now than ever. since working out is just about on everyone’s agenda for a healthy lifestyle. Movement and the comfort of clothing that moves with you, not restricting is also an expression of how we feel. I love designing for how we feel in what we wear. The construction of the garments, for fit, movement, and comfort is incredibly important for how we feel in what we wear.
Luxury Endless: The Diana dress has become a global phenomenon, worn by women of every age and style. Why do you think this silhouette resonates so deeply across generations?
Norma Kamali: The Diana dress was a big hit the first time I did the styles in the seventies, then again in the late eighties, early nineties and again recently. The Diana style was designed after the most classic timeless styles of the Ancient Greek goddess Diana. The one shoulder and draped movement of fabric over the body has universal appeal to my pleasant surprise. It also shows that a good design holds over time from Ancient Greece to several decades during modern times.
Luxury Endless: You’ve long championed seasonless, longevity‑driven fashion. In a world obsessed with “newness,” how do you stay committed to slow, intelligent design?
Norma Kamali: Newness is exciting and the fun part of fashion and seasonless longevity driven fashion, a combination of both is inspired by a woman with great style. Intelligent design comes from intuiting what newness should be purchased selectively and which will be in investment in the future. This intelligence can be learned, self taught but hardly ever taught.
Luxury Endless: Your work has always balanced sensuality with practicality. How do you approach this duality when creating a new collection?
Norma Kamali: Sensuality is a human feeling and how we react to fabric and the physical reaction to how a style fits the body results in a favourable feeling about wearing clothing. What makes a special style like this practical is how the price ( not more than rent) and the easy care of the style. When a style is practical we wear it more often and we get more enjoyment and greater value from the purchase.
Luxury Endless: Your archives are rich with iconic pieces the Sleeping Bag Coat, sculptural swimwear, jersey draping. How do you revisit your past without repeating it?
Norma Kamali: Sometimes I never look back at things I have done in the past and then there are other times especially when I see some direct lift off of styles of mine, I appreciate the values of the collections through the years. However when I do like recreate the sweats collection I did recently due to customer prompts

Luxury Endless: Digital culture has transformed how fashion is consumed. How has this shift influenced the way you communicate your brand and your values?
Norma Kamali: Digital culture is the fashion magic of our time. We can communicate more directly than ever as designers with our clients. We get feedback and see how women globally make the collection their own. The magic is the efficiency personalization and familiarity which promotes loyalty to the brand.
